James Bell, Attorney

James Bell is an experienced criminal defense and legal ethics lawyer.  For over 17 years he has defended individuals facing criminal charges.  James understands that felony or misdemeanor charges can be life altering events.  Those charges can impact your job, your driving privileges, your family, and could lead to incarceration.  James’s knowledge and experience has guided 100s of clients through the uncertainties of the criminal system.  In addition, when businesses are confronted with the need to conduct internal investigations James not only advises but directs them through the nuances of that process.

James also regularly provides advice to attorneys and law firms on difficult ethical issues.  If the lawyer or firm faces disciplinary action or civil litigation James defends them before the Disciplinary Commission or in court.

Because of his deep experience and reputation, James is well known and active in his practice areas.  He served as a major felony public defender in state court, and currently is a Director on the Indiana Federal Community Defenders Board.  James is a regular contributor to The Indiana Lawyer on criminal law and legal ethics topics.  He also has served as an adjunct professor at Indiana University, Robert H. McKinney School of Law teaching professional responsibility.  James can be seen in the ICLEF produced YouTube series The Amateur Life Coach about ethical issues facing lawyers.

James is an established leader in the areas of criminal defense and legal ethics.  He served as Chair of the Indiana State Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section and also is past chair of the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section.  In addition, he chaired the Indiana State Bar Association's Legal Ethics Committee.

James currently is President-Elect of the Indianapolis Bar Association
